Arts and Adventure
The natural and historical beauty of the Old Mamainse Harbour is a haven for artists, musicians and educators. The four bedroom rental cabin and the Ellen Van Laar Art Studio offer quaint respite near four islands, a dozen basalt caves and many shipwrecks. The nearby Pancake Bay and Lake Superior Provincial Parks offer culture, water routes and trails.
The Coppermine Point navigation light sits opposite White Fish Point Lighthouse and bird sanctuary on the Michigan side of Lake Superior where ships have entered Whitefish Bay for centuries. It is the closest point to the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Divers explore the old dock cribs and shipwrecks of the harbour. Painters seek the interplay of light on waves and islands, as did the Group of Seven. Geologists enjoy the copper veins and 6000 year old copper diggings. Hikers love the “Dragon Trail”. Natives come to sing the tunes and stories of time. Water travelers want to see the cliffs, islands, and where the voyageurs came to camp and trade.
Your hostess, Ellen Van Laar is an experienced guide, outdoor educator, musician and artist. She can help you to design and facilitate a retreat, vacation, meeting or education seminar.
Ulrike Pottery Studio
Inspired by the natural beauty surrounding my Batchawana Bay Studio Gallery, I transform a lump of clay into unique, artful and functional pieces one at a time.
Berkana Art Studio
I teach the fundamentals of drawing and painting, to children and adults, at my studio. Students can learn to draw and paint in groups or in private lessons.
